A FRED on a snowplow….. now I’ve seen everything.
Decent substitute for a caboose!
Has the plow seen service?
Havent seen it since then no plowing as yet.
this wedge snowplow is a CP built plow. They may look like Russells..but the whole fleet were built in Cps shops early in the twentieth century.
There are 3 basic designs, this one, the type used in the mountains with shorter apron in front of cupola and bars over windows for tree trunks etc, and a double track version which throws all the snow to the right side.
In southern Ontario, we operated the type above and the double track types at speeds as high as 60mph on the main track..and almost that fast on some branchlines briefly when charging at very heavily drifted cuts.
The ones used in the mountains usually operated at lower speeds breaking through avalanches.
I should also note, rules dictated that plows like this were restricted to 25mph when be handled backwards like this one. That was because snow might pack behind the wings and cause them to open. 25mph would be no problem on the 10mph Havelock Sub, but if they were handled on the read of mainline trains, they usually faced forward.
