Caption: With a crew ordered at Mactier for 0400, the odds of Canadian Pacific's RCP train making Toronto in daylight looked slim. Sometimes, though, the best bet is to take a gamble. At least that is what I told myself as I set off for CP's Mactier Subdivision under the cover of darkness. Arriving at Mile 23 well before sunrise, anticipation grew with the passage of each train that ran ahead of 40B as night gave way to dawn and eventually the first rays of light. Almost three hours and three freight trains later, CP 4107 called a clear signal on the approach to Bolton, racing towards Toronto in glorious morning light. Sometimes you just get lucky.
