While the SD40 was a big hit for CP, the GP40 cousin was of no interest to the railroad. By the end of the 1990's CP found itself very power short for both 4 axle and 6 axle units. Mainly thanks to retiring all Alco's on its roster along with an upsurge in traffic. Helm leasing would would supply CP with both four and six axle units, and in the end CP would purchase a number of the former Guilford GP40's on lease. Prior to repainting 4656 is seen working the few existing customers left on the short Canpa subdivision as it is seen about to duck under the Queensway in Etobicoke.

  1. Are those signals still in place or gone?

  2. I believe they are gone. Last time I went over the bridge on the Queensway I did not see them.

  3. I know CP didn’t pick up the GP40′s SO for switching they used ‘pups’ as referred to here..SW1200′s? Certain track arrangements didn’t allow for 6 axles. Great shot of an-ex Guilford unit in Etobicoke!
