Caption: While on a trip to commission a new Knox Kershaw KBR925 ballast regulator for KRC, NAES (Canada) Ltd. Sales Manager David Wylie came across this Keewatin Railway Company Ford van. Certainly not your average hi-rail vehicle found on most railways, this one is steel-wheeled and railbound. The maintenance vehicle is equipped with a turntable allowing the crew to reverse direction of the truck so they do not have to travel backwards for any great distances. Note it is connected to a heavy duty 'push car' for transporting track material and/or small power tools. (Photo by David Wylie used with permission).The Keewatin Railway Company (KRC) is a First Nations-owned rail line that operates in Northern Manitoba, between The Pas, and Pukatawagan. The railway company owns the line from Sherritt Junction (interchange with Hudson Bay) to Lynn Lake, about 185 miles (310 km). It currently operates mixed (passenger and freight) services from The Pas to Putakawagan, about 156 miles (251 km), of which 58 miles (93 km) is on the tracks of Hudson Bay Railway KRC started operations on April 1, 2006. The passenger service, formerly operated by VIA Rail Canada, continues under a new operating agreement between Keewatin Railway Company and Via Rail Canada. KRC operates two round trips between Pukatawagan and The Pas each week. Trains carry passengers and freight for the community of Pukatawagan.
