While CP never owned any SD45's the second hand market at least graced them with a handful, well on the outside they were SD45's, internally they were SD40's with upgraded electrical systems. There was something about the 5400 series that made me hunt down as many as I could. The series had units formerly from railroads such as: CSX, UP, KCS, NS,CNW and DRG&W just to name a few. As for the 5490 series most eventually were reequipped for heavy yard work, including snow plows that were replaced with CP style pilots and extra grab irons and upgraded wheel slip controls. Unfortunately the 5400's the first SD40's retired and returned to their leasing companies when CP began slowly retiring the SD40 fleet. Here CP 5493 complete with its SD45 car body is seen busy working Thunder Bay yard on a nice summer's day. Up until their retirement Thunder Bay was a common location for the 5490 series, especially working long cuts of grain cars. A number of these units are still around today working for their new owners.
