Caption: When the child is away, the Dad gets to play! This was the first time in a long time, I was able to get out and enjoy a hobby that doesn't get much attention these days. With my wife working nights, and my daughter at my in-laws - I found myself with some time on my hands. After trying other nights through the week, I had little to no success in photographing a train. However, this was all about to change this weekend. Shot on a humid Friday night, 438 roars through name sign "Chatham East", past the site of the old train order office that once stood - and across the bridge on route to London.

Thanks Terry. Yes, it has even in the nearly 7 years I’ve lived here. Shame really….I feel like the railways lost little pride in roadbed maintenance and appearance.

Yes, vegetation control is not what it was. At one time the right of way was kept clear back to the fence line, a winter task for the section crews and regular spraying. Vegetation control was neglected and eventually consumed the pole line and now is encroaching on the ballast line, in some locations almost forming a canopy. You wouldn’t want your arm out the locomotive window or ride the side of equipment at certain locations.
Very true Terry. Some lines are worse than others. My opinion is this should be kept up, especially at or near a railway crossing. I remember when I came here for work, I went to find the business where I was going for my interview. I remember coming off a side street….but at the last minute realized there was a railway crossing. Lights, gates and all protected the crossing….but I never saw it because of the vegetation on trees growing out and blocking that line of sight. That vegetation wasn’t even on railway property either! Goes to show that it should be kept up on a regular basis.
