TWILIGHT ON THE ROCK - Terra Transport Extra 945 West runs upgrade through Bowring Park in the center of St. John's with just barely enough light to capture this image. A daily scheduled 547 mile run to Port aux Basques, this time it left the capital city with a unique consist of only four 1200 horsepower units and two cabooses. Upon arrival at Bishops Falls early the next morning, it would pick up a coach (and in all likelihood several empty containers at Grand Falls) making it a mixed run to Corner Brook.

  2. Thank you Sir! It was my first and only time seeing such a consist. I was waiting for dozens of the trailing green Terra Transport intermodal containers behind the first two engines as it rounded the curve and couldn’t believe my eyes! Even the double caboose lash up was a rarity!

  4. Life is indeed full of amazing and wonderful co-incidences. I have since released a second book, RAILS AROUND THE ROCK – A Then & Now Celebration of the Newfoundland Branchlines (2014), also published by Creative Book Publishing.   6. Thanks Stephen! Had I known at the time that the end was so near,I would have chased and photographed a whole lot more. However, in 1987, we had all hoped that it would have lasted a few more years.

  7. How much notice did you have it was going to shut down?

  8. There were rumours by the end of 1987 that it was going to be shutdown the following year. The official announcement came in June of 1988 that it would cease to exist effective September 1, 1988 but that was later extended to September 30th.
