Caption: TTC PCC 4139 (the last of the TTC's first PCC streetcar order: 140 A1-class cars numbered 4000-4139 built in 1938 by CC&F) crosses the Don River bridge on Queen Street, operating on the King route bound for Vincent Loop (Dundas & Bloor). It's seen passing construction workers busy putting the finishing touches on the shoefly diversion tracks for the temporary Don River trestle where streetcars would be diverted later that day.
At this time, reconstruction work was required on the bridge carrying Queen Street over the Don River, so a parallel trestle was constructed next to it to carry streetcar traffic on the busy King, Queen, and Kingston Rd. routes while the regular bridge was closed to traffic. The overhead catenary for the diversion is already connected, and other photos from that day suggest crews were getting ready to cut in the diversion tracks into the main tracks, as streetcars were using the trestle later on that day. Streetcars operated over the temporary Don trestle from mid-August to at least the end of October while work on the main bridge was underway.
Other notable things in this photo are the Three Stooges ad on the front of 4139 (probably showing at some local theatre or venue in town), and the Coleman Lamp and Stove Company Limited building in the background, on the east side of the Don River.
