Great shot Dean…that location was always a favorite of mine, the building in behind was the HAYES (Hayes-Dana) Forge that was operating well into the mid-80′s, a little further south of this location at Glendale where DOMTAR was is not recognizable today….
This was the final nail in the coffin for cool lines in Niagara. Once this line was shut down, all the neat trackage was gone.
What’s amazing is if you load up google earth pro on a computer, you can go back to 1930′s when the welland canal was built.
Elevated structures like this , concrete were abound all around thorold as some kind of futuristic transportation network but it was all undone when the new canal was built. You can see the before/after as they took arial images before and after and it’s all on google earth pro. Look in downtown Thorold it’s quite the structure.
This was/is the last remnant of that.
I was also around when this line was in service and I went to shoot it only once and just missed it. I didn’t know what I was doing though…. silly me
