Caption: Toronto Transit Commission CLRV 4011 heads west on the TTC's 506 Carlton line, passing through the intersection of Gerrard and Blackburn. These Canadian Light Rail Vehicles were constructed by Bombardier-predecessor Urban Transportation Development Corporation (UTDC) from 1978 through 1981, and were unique to the city of Toronto, Ontario. After nearly 40 years of service (beginning on September 30, 1979), the CLRVs will be retired by the end of 2019, replaced by more modern streetcars. In the background is the Zhong Hua Men (中华门 or 中華門) Chinese Archway in the city's East Chinatown district. The archway, which officially opened on September 12, 2009, was built to commemorate Canada's Chinese pioneers, labourers, railway workers and subsequent descendants and immigrants of Chinese descent who contributed to all aspects of Canadian society.
