Caption: Time machine! I figured with 3030 leading west on 431, it was time to take this shot, although the sun didn't want to cooperate with me. What image is this a time machine of? Steve Young's shot from May 2, 1980 of VIA 85, led by CN GP40 4017 (http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=21376). In a way the time machine shot is sort of the -2 version of the shot. I figure,4017 is a GP40, and 3030 is a GP40-2LW it was time for this pic.
What has changed? Today VIA 85 has been reduced to 2 cars, and 3 cars periodically, although it hasn't happened for about 3-4 years. The Brampton Sub has since been renamed the Guelph Sub, and was sold to Railtex, the original owners of the GEXR on November 16, 1998. Railtex was purchased by Rail America on October 14, 1999, which was purchased on October 1, 2012 by short line operator Genesee & Wyoming Railway. Ofcourse with new owners came the new orange paint.
But this line was then purchased by another company; GO Transit/Metrolinx bought the line in late September 2014 from Silver (GEXR/CN junction at Georgetown) to the siding at Kitchener where the GO trains park during the night. Also in the last year, CTC was installed and put into service, eliminating OCS from the Guelph Sub. It seems some repair/ugrades are occuring on the bridge, based on the platform suspended under the bridge. Also over the last 36 years since Steve's shot was taken, foliage has taken over around the bridge, making this shot quite difficult to achieve.
So what else is to change? I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
