Tillsonburg was once so rich with railroad history, with lines from CNR, CPR and he Canada Southern all running through town.by the end of the 1980's the CPR Port Burwell subdivision was cut back from Port Burwell to Tillsonburg. The CNR Burford subdivision was cut back too, leaving Tillsonburg and being severed at Burford. The late 1990's would claim the east end of the Cayuga subdivision ending it at Delhi and severing it as a through route. The Canada Southern in the mid 1980's would loose its Conrail control and end up being split up between CN and CP, ultimately loosing all through traffic by the 1990's with the loss of the last CSX trackage rights trains at that time. The line was at that time discontinued and CN and CP simply waited for permission to abandon most of the line. In the end OSR purchased what remained of the Port Burwell subdivision and Trillium got the surviving section of the Cayuga subdivision. When Trillium gave up the Cayuga sub. CN took it back and leased it to the OSR but now OSR is getting out of the lease and the future looks grim as CN has no interest in keeping the line, as a lot of bridges need rebuilding along the route. April 23, 2020 was a somber grey day as OSR's two "F" units retraced the route once used by not just CN but Wabach F7's. The previous week a lone centre beam was left at a lumber yard east of Tillsonburg so the power made the very last trip in the driving rain to retrieve it, most likely making history as the last train to operate past the one time advance signal for the long abandoned CPR diamond with the Port Burwell subdivision just ahead.

  1. Would have this been the advanced signal for the Port Burwell diamond? Based on the side of the mast the head is mounted on it would have been a signal for EB movements

  2. Correction – I see my mistake
