Three foot gauge White Pass & Yukon Route Railway (Skagway to Whitehorse) placed an order for 4 new road switcher locomotives with Bombardier in the early 1980's. Units 111-114 were completed in July 1982, painted in WP&YR's new blue colour scheme. Mechanically they were quite similar to WP&YR's previous MLW/ALCo road switchers, other than the safety cab (Spec DL-535E, A1A-A1A trucks, Alco 6-251D diesel, 1200 HP).
Unfortunately WP&YR fell on such hard times by mid 1982 (mining downturn, competition from the new parallel Klondike Highway) that they were forced to suspend operations and mothball the railway; they could not accept their new locomotives. Due to limited demand for three foot gauge locomotives, the units were stored in Quebec for many years until sold. In 1991 units 112 and 113 were purchased by the US Gypsum Company for their 3 foot gauge railway at Plaster City, California.
I believe that this picture shows unit 113 in transit to US Gypsum in the winter of 1991. The A1A-A1A trucks are on a flatcar behind it. 113's US Gypsum career was short, it was retired after an accident - apparently USG acquired unit 111 to replace it in 1993. Units 111 and 112 retain their WP&YR numbers, and stayed blue until 2017.
Resurrected as a tourist operation, WP&YR acquired unit 114 in 1995. I encountered WPYR 114 in July 2018, shutdown outside WP&YR's Skagway Alaska shops - it is their only locomotive still in the blue scheme.

  1. I spent two weeks in Whitehorse YT between Aug & Sept 1982 and I was lucky enough to see some activity in the WP&YR yards. The part I enjoyed the most was watching old #73 at work. Sadly I went back again during the same time period in 1983 an all I saw was lots of stored material/equipment, long grass, and silence. Thanks for the pictures! I sure remember the blue.

  2. Thank you for the comment James, and congratulations on your RPca contributions, including WP&YR 94 at Carcross in 1982.
Info I provided found mainly in wikipedia – their WP&YR loco and railcar roster is really good. WPYR 114, splitting image of this one (but wheels on rails!), is used for work trains on the WP&YR. In 2006 it got into a serious work train derailment that injured 3 and 1 fatality. It was shipped out for repair in 2007. I get the impression it’s not used much – seem to recall reading somewhere that it’s not entirely compatible with WP&YR’s other MLW DL-535E road switchers.
