Caption: GEXR makes a daylight appearance at the newly constructed University of Waterloo ION LRT station. 2073 reflects in the architecture as the train traverses a sight likely unique for Canada: A functional Gauntlet Track - automatic switches on either end of the platform switch the train to the Gauntlet (outer track) to avoid the close clearance of the platform.
This was NOT easy to do. I figured perhaps on the longest days of the year it may be possible to get 584 in Daylight up to Elmira. I tried for 4 years after last shooting this in 2014 and the lease was coming due so this was my last summer to try it. So here we are exactly on the 2018 summer solstice, 8:30 PM at the University of Waterloo's LRT station, and there's still just enough light to eek out this shot which I found by un-happy accident a couple weeks prior. Un-happy because I got my daylight shots on June 7th and I thought I nailed it - after one of my shots a block south of here I chased a bit, saw this shot, and realized, dammit, I have to go back and get this - it just looked too good to pass up. I had to try again. I got lucky. ION Service is expected to begin very soon as they target a real Spring 2019 start-up.
Shameless plug time: In the March 2019 Railpace Magazine now at select newstands and hobby shops, the cover issue is a retrospective on the Goderich-Exeter Railway by Jason Noe, and I had the pleasure to submit a number of my photos to this photo-packed issue. There's a number of never before seen photos by me in there, along with lots of Jason's fine work and a great 10/10 photo by Jason Bartlett. I promise plenty of surprises to those who buy a copy or subscribe. Railpace is neat as you get a hundred and change photos each issue (It's really just a photo gallery magazine!) along with a great summary of news across the US and Canadian east. We appreciate your support of the printed word for those that do go get a copy! (Please add a comment below if you know where to pick up a copy!) Cheers.
