This so-so November afternoon actually started off as a quest to find #328, which was down in the Welland area. Upon success, and return, I did my shopping/snooping and heard #333 over the scanner being held at mile 2.8 Grimsby sub. It was late in the day and in November the sun sets early. I parked at Whirlpool and Stanley Av as I could see the train almost around the bend from the road. Walked in. Quite the surprise it had a Duluth, Winnipeg & Pacific on the lead. Rare thing in these parts. And only 10 of these SD40s on the roster to begin with. The light was so bad that I had to find an old board and use it for a monopod in order to get a shot of this train with the Mamiya 645. I have 400 ISO film and couldn't even get a reading. This is the result of "board-held" effort for 8 seconds set at 5.6 for some sharpness. Lost a bit of colour but at least I did not blur the shot while counting off the time.
DW&P was CN's connection to Duluth, MN from Fort Frances, ON. The road existence began between 1901-1908; it was originally the Duluth, Virginia & Rainy Lake. Taken over by CNoR (Canadian Northern) which in turn went bankrupt and was taken over by CN. This subsidiary line had its identity eliminated for the most part when CN began in 1994/95 to put all locos under one banner, which was 'CN North America'. However, the DWP for all intents and purposes still exists.
Quite the lashup this was: DWP 5909, CR 6657 and GT 5806. A real CN treat.

  2. Certainly a rare “bird” in Southern Ontario. Was this train waiting to cross the Whirlpool Bridge?

  3. Thanks, Marcus. To Mr. CTP: This #333 was a Toronto to Buffalo (Conrail @ Frontier Yd) train. It would go onto the Stamford sub and end up crossing at Fort Erie.

  6. @Cdn… no it looks like the train was stopped at Clifton behind the signal that would take it on to the Stamford Sub. I worked this train many times. Never a big fan of running the DW&P units though. Love the Conrail SD45-2!

  7. That’s a heluva consist there Mr. Mooney! I can vaguely remember seeing one of these DWP SD’s trailing on an eastbound freight working the yard at Brantford quite a few years ago now (2003-ish maybe?)

  8. James: It would be interesting (and remarkable) if you saw the same one I did, which was DWP 5908 behind CN 5539, #410, in Brantford on August 29, 2004.:o) Glad you like the shot.

  9. It could very well be the same train that we both saw! For some reason I’m wanting to think the leader on mine was a C44-9W, but I really cant remember well enough to say for sure. Nonetheless if you got a photo of said train I’d definitely be interested in seeing it :)
