This is an angle I have done before, even recently with a smoky 4003. However, I had yet to have a good opportunity at shots of CN since they assumed Hamilton operations from SOR on December 14 and this is one of the more noteworthy angles the N&NW has to offer with respect to stamping the location as Hamilton. Here, the 07:00 yard job has finished its work down the hole for the day and is led back to Stuart Street by 7058 - a beltpack-equipped unit. For those wondering, all of power sets for CN in Hamilton so far have been beltpack-equipped. The three boxcars upfront are from Parkdale Warehousing, and a lone tank brought up the rear. I am still adjusting to the fact that I won't find SOR switching out there in the north end anymore.

  2. Thanks Jason. Depending on where the sun is, it’s a great spot for trains coming out of the hole, or a great spot if there’s a late-running freight (or the Amtrak into Toronto) on the Grimsby too. It’s a spot I try to get people to if they’re checking out operations in Hamilton.

  4. The N&NW Spur – name comes from its origins in the Northern and North Western Railway (the product of the merger between the Hamilton and North Western Railway and the Northern Railway of Canada). It’s the CN trackage in the industrial area (from the Grimsby Sub to the east end).

  5. That’s about the extent of my knowledge of it. I am sure there are other members who know much more and might be able to offer further insight.

  6. It should still be the N&NW spur – it was under SOR. Lastly, while you may find this hard to believe, SOR used to always have a few CN units on hand during the Steel Train days (ending around 2010/2011) so shots of CN down here were not all that hard to come by.

    I’ll dig some up. This bridge was built approx 2013 though so it post-dates regular CN power. Nice shot.
