Caption: This image was shot from the Waterdown Rd bridge, looking east; in 1989. In view is CN 9449, 9572 and 2112 with train #393. I posted this for a couple of reasons. One being to show the lush green stand of trees in the background; a piece of rural countryside within the City of Burlington. And secondly, in case someone out there wants to match this location with a current image to show for TIME MACHINE. This is an easy opportunity. For behind the motive power, that beautiful stand of trees was leveled for the Aldershot GO station. Those of you out there that believe man is responsible for global warming; why look farther than here? Coolness of the woods exchanged for a hot asphalt parking lot.

Where is the CN Aldershot Yard? Is it a recent innovation too?
The freshly leveled ground is for the track. The woods in the background was cleared out for the GO station and parking lot. It was a dramatic change of scenery when all this took place. The fresh earth extended on the North side all the way to the end of Howard Rd, a half mile or so west. It was for construction of the yard lead tracks.
Oh the days of the GP40-2′s. I miss them and power braking down Dundas Hill. Now its all dynamic braking.
CN’s Aldershot Yard runs from the new underpass at King Rd in Burlington (mi 33.3 Oakville Sub to mi 36 at Snake) down to Bayview near Hamilton Botanical Gardens. You can see some yard switching action from the GO/VIA station parking lot.
Sad but true, Arnold. I’ve heard that part of the rationale for building the Aldershot yard was the fierce opposition to overnight switching (previously relocated from CN’s Hamilton Bay front Stuart St. yard) taking place south of the Ford plant. Consequences? Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for!
