This heritage CN station was built in 1930, replacing a smaller structure. It was a beauty for its' time; had ticket and express offices, separate washrooms, separate waiting rooms, inc one for ladies and one for smokers. CN got rather ambitious with this building on account CP was running a branchline into town and CN wanted to remain competitive. How different from today!! The Budd car, #6104, I believe at that time ran from Vegreville to N. Edmonton daily. It was cancelled once VIA took over operations by 1978. The golden era of rail travel is over, but at least the station was preserved.

  1. Hello. The Budd car was a daily trip from North Battleford, Saskatchewan, to Edmonton. It went west in the mornings and east in the late afternoon / early evening. It was the last vestige of Train 5 & 6, Winnipeg to Edmonton “the long way” and, later, the “Continental Ltd”.

  2. Thanks for this. I can imagine that being a long lonely ride from one end to the other.:o) This shot is from more than 40 years back. Any idea when this service ended?
