There is nothing like a country drive. On this July evening, I went to what I once considered one of my favourite spots to railfan in Haldimand County. Here, RailLink (Rail America) 4095, 1755 and an unidentifiable third engine are tied down for the night with a string of tanker cars. This became known as 'Garnet' for the railway - after the 'realignment' was built (mid 70's) to not only serve the Imperial Oil Refinery, but to the Ontario Power Generation plant in Nanticoke as well. Just off to the left remains a switch that was part of the interchange with the Air Line that ran through Jarvis, where only a spur remains today to store excess tanker cars bound to and from Imperial Oil.
Much has changed since this photo was taken outside of Jarvis at the Concession 8 Walpole crossing. Upgrades by the Southern Ontario Railway have led to a couple of extra tracks built in the yard, as well as upgrades to their security. It was their security that asked me to leave the premises for good approx. 2 years ago, as they thought I was photographing for 'unwelcome' circumstances.

  1. Security of what form? I have never seen security of any kind at Garnet and crews are always very friendly while I take photos…

I’d understand security at ESSO asking you to move along as I have been checked up on out there before, but never in Garnet.

Your mystery unit looks to be RLK 4057

  2. I’m kinda thinking that mystery unit looks more like a GP35….maybe the RLK 5005 ??

  3. Can somebody shed more light on the “air line” that ran through jarvis? The only security of any kind that I can think of being there is when they were building the new storage track off the main. I’v personally never seen security at Garnet or known of any that have been there.

  4. You’re right, that is indeed 5005. I just noticed there is Rail America lettering on it.

  5. Where are the tracks in relation to the old CN Jarvis station?: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2194355

  6. Guess it’s time for me to clarify…yes, it was a crew that was driving around that day. When they first arrived – and saw me…they asked what I was doing, etc. They had said well, ok….but if you hang around here too much the police (I can only assume OPP unless SOR has their own policing?) might ask you to leave and you could get charged with trespassing. I don’t see how I could considering I wasn’t on railway lands anymore. They came back two hours later and were a little firmer….and because I felt threatened….I left….now, keep in mind. I am a big guy and I keep my head shaved. I have had this misconception before. I really am harmless…

  7. Makes total sense, but don’t let that ruin your experience/time photographing the SOR. I always shoot from the road and never on their property and have never had an issue.

I have talked to the OPP down in Nanticoke because they wanted to know what I was doing but they were friendly and just asked me to stay on public property.

I think if you went to photograph the SOR at Garnet say tomorrow for example you’d have no issues.
