The Seventies C P Rail ...

….when every lashup was an adventure in motive power variety.....

    ….GMD – GMD - MLW combo: GP35 and SW1200RS is assisted by a MLW 'ugly 80' RS-23

accelerating on the downgrade at the Campbellville Road crossing, April 7, 1979 Kodachrome by S.Danko

   Note the location of 5006's marker lights ... a GP35 leading ! ? !

Given no flags, no markers illuminated, this is a regularly scheduled train, likely this is fourth class #52 (?)

  1. Now there’s a neat lashup!

Rather than an RS23, that last unit kind of looks like a 6500-series S3 switcher. Perhaps local power off the Goderich Sub lifted from Guelph Jct?

  2. Maybe the van also was lifted at the junction also.

  3. Both comments are likely correct. I think the day yard job was still in place in Guelph when this was taken. Those units had to be sent to Toronto for service every so often. The roadswitcher would bring them to the Jct. on the way back from Guelph & reverse when that or another unit from Toronto or London arrived at G. Jct..

  4. I’ve revisited this great photo & offer a few more thoughts. GP-35s led often & in fact, many hoggers preferred to have leading in some consists where they were the only such unit, because they could control the wheelslip. I recall having a GP35 leading a big M unit one trip on 906.
This portion of the Galt Sub was still directionally signalled Current of Traffic ABS in 1979. Also, the welded rail had not yet replaced jointed rail. Both CWR & bi directional CTC were installed prior to GO train service starting up in 1981.
Also notice the ditch lights weren’t on. They were either not yet wired or just not turned on. Their use was not mandatory when this photo was taken.
