The railway was aggressively adding to its fleet of Engineering Work Equipment cranes in 1957 by adding six new units. CN 50394 was the third unit built in the 1957 order, and was delivered new to Winnipeg, MB that year. All six machines were Wellman 30 ton capacity locomotive cranes. CN had received two new Wellman's the year before in 1956, and would acquire five more in 1958, and close out the decade with one Wellman DE-400 40 ton capacity unit in 1959. (map coordinates are the CN Work Equipment Repair Facility in Winnipeg (Transcona), MB as the photo location is unknown).

  1. These Wellman cranes were on virtually every rail/culvert/bridge gang in the 1960s in Northern Ontario. Brings back a lot of memories. Thanks Paul for posting. Don

  2. Beautiful reflection, not a ripple anywhere.

  3. Don,
The Wellman and American cranes purchased by CN in the 50′s, 60′s, 70′s, & 80′s were distributed across the entire CN network at the time. Some moved inter-regionally over their lifetimes.

Many of the cranes you may have seen on the Great Lakes Region during your CN days would have been (delivered new to)

  4. Amazing Paul !

  5. Thanks Michael. Found in one of my old files. Wish I had the precise date & location to share. :-( Maybe a CN Prairie Region person will recognize the bridge and chime in with an i.d. :-)

  6. I’m sure there is a Bridge Guy that knows this location.
