The only thing left of the former CN Cayuga Sub where the Jarvis, ON station once sat is a little bit of overgrown roadbed behind the new Tim Horton's coffee shop. It is quite a dramatic change from the image presented in Arnold Mooney's January 1980 photo from almost the same vantage point 37 years earlier.

  1. Quite the changing scene. I hope you were able to drive down and see the old station on its new foundation. The historical society has done an excellent job with it. There is some local railroad historica within as well.

  2. Yes, I remember Arnold’s photo from a while back. The constant motion of progress has not been kind in this case. Rather sad.

  3. Hi Joseph,

Yes, I have been to the relocation site several times. Will be donating a few artifacts to the society for display.

My Dad was the CN Roadmaster in Jarvis from 1969 to 1985. His office was in the former waiting room area of the station. When we moved to Jarvis in 1969 there was an Operator position at the Jarvis station. When the Hagersville Sub. was rerouted to cross highway 6 north of the hamlet of Garnet and connect with the Nanticoke Spur via a new railway crossing at grade with the Cayuga Sub. at CN Garnet, the operator was relocated there. At that time the section foreman and his crew moved into the operators area and used it as an office and lunch room until their positions were abolished and the Cayuga Sub. was abandoned. The signal maintainer worked out of the shanty immediately east of the station.

I was a CN section man at Jarvis in 1970 & 71 before transferring to the Work Equipment group at Danforth Shops in Scarborough, ON in late 1971.

Lots of work and personal history in the old station for me.

  4. I can’t say I’m a fan of this, it’s all in the pursuit of money by CN who sold the land to local developers.

But alas, time marches on and rights of ways in towns are being sold off to the highest bidder.

  5. This would be suited for a site like the book ‘The Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore”. Perhaps before and after shots. It would be tear jerking stuff!

  6. Well it’s about time someone captured the new Timmys at Jarvis. Sad to day too that the station wasn’t the only landmark that was lost trackside. Shortly after the stations relocation to the south end of town the old Co-op silos came down as well. This structure served as the Jarvis Farmers Market for a brief time. And also….from the days of the H&NW the old she’d just north of this

  7. (To continue previous comment)…the old shed which may have served the railway came down too. This stood on the original alignment of the H&NW…which ducked under the Cayuga Sub. on its way to Port Dover. From the days before amalgamation and rebuilding!

  8. It’s a shame the elevator there wasn’t receiving rail service anymore when Railink started up. Would have been nice to see at least a small piece of rail survive here. Such a sad scene

  9. Paul, that is very cool! I’m glad that there is such a powerful personal connection there for you! I was out at the station on the August long weekend for heritage days and quite enjoyed how it all looked.

    Are you still local then?

  10. Joseph, not local for a number of decades now! Being a railroader, and working in the Engineering department meant moving around to different areas of the province and country if your career so dictated. After finishing high school in Hagersville, ON I worked on the section crew in Jarvis until I moved to Burlington, ON in 1972 while I worked at the CN Danforth Work Equipment Shop in Scarborough, ON. Moved to Capreol, ON in 1977 to assist with the opening of a new Work Equipment shop, then off to CN H.Q. in Montreal in 1979. Returned to CN in Toronto from 1984 to 1987, then back to H.Q. from 87′ to 90′. Since then I have relocated to St. Catharines, ON, Dundas, ON and now reside in Binbrook, ON. I’m retiring at the end of March next year….and NOT moving! :)
I have other old photos of CN in Jarvis that will never make it to the site. For those interested in seeing them, contact me at my personal email through the site administrator.
