Caption: The old Canadian American Railroad. From 1994 to its bankrupt end in 2002. Really, there is no other collection of railroads in Canada in my mind as confusing as this bunch. CDAC operated former CP lines between Lennoxville Quebec and Brownsville, Maine, beginning in 1994. The Quebec Southern operated former CP lines between Montreal and Lennoxville, beginning in 1996; same year as Northern Vermont took over operations running from CPs line south from Brookport, Quebec into Vermont. It became under the Bangor & Aroostook System as well; all of this owned by a holding company called Iron Road Rwys. Confused? Anyway, the conglomerate built up business rather intensively, but neglected the physical plant to a degree that deferred maintenance eventually led to bankruptcy in 2001 and in 2002 it was all taken over by Montreal, Maine and Atlantic (MM&A...Yes, the Lac Megantic tragedy) Anyway, seen here is (CDAC) BAR 350 (formerly BAR 81), Amttrak 397 (leased ??) and HATX 176 (leased) rolling thru some rather unkempt right of way.
