The Guelph Junction Railway, 100% owned by the City of Guelph since 1910 (Prior to that 70%), is jointly serviced in the "North End" of Guelph by both CN and GEXR (vis a vis CPKC). The Guelph Junction entered into a tri-tripartite agreement in 1955 to build industrial spurs to the new Industrial park, which gave CN rights to service the customers in return for 50% of all costs to maintain or expand the railway. In 1998 CN handed their side to GEXR, while GJR handed theirs to OSR both on 20 or so year contracts. Fast forward to today, CN took their side back in November 2018 but GEXR took over GJR in 2020 effectively trading places from their prior duties.
The focal point of all this action in Guelph is the GJR/CNR interchange tracks, one at Dawson road, and now two, at Edinburgh/Woodlawn along with a wye. Because of this, you'll often find trains riding around the wye like a carousel going round and round to get out of everyone's way and finish their work. Almost daily GEXR 582 and CN L542 will work the north end at the same time. But I've seen as many as three trains here at the same time - sometimes it's CN 580/542/GEXR 582, sometimes it's CN 542/GEXR 582 and 583. There have been times 568 came over to Guelph with hot interchange cars for GJR as well. In July 2023 I got one of my favourite photos of two trains here, both trains "elephant style" with matching engine types, framed with the nearly 100 year old switchstand for XT99. Weeks later, construction would begin on XT99A adding a 2'nd interchange track and if you visit this spot now, you'll basically find a small yard, a testament to the surge of business that's come online on the Guelph Junction since GEXR took it over.

  1. Also note, this is image #1500 for me – I should have posted this for 1500 but I wasn’t thinking about that at the time :)

On to the next milestone – 2000 here we come.
