Caption: The Grand Trunk extended the original Georgian Bay & Lake Erie Railroad to Wiarton from Owen Sound in 1882. Lot of fanfare that opening day Aug 1st, with a 13 car train and a extensive celebrations. The GTR built a new and improved station in 1904, which is the one pictured. At one point there was also a turntable and roundhouse in town. Roundhouse came down in the 1930s and the turntable was removed in 1961. Passenger service southward was achieved by the train coming out of Owen Sound to the Jct for Wiarton, and backed into town for riders. This service ended in 1957. Freight service ended around 1971 and in 1972 no more trains ran. By 1980 the track was gone. Wiarton station was saved and moved to Bluewater Park near the harbour. Old postcards and photos show an extension that is not seen in this photo. That was the freight shed on the end, dismantled in 1972. The photo here shows the back of the station, the customer entrance, as it was more stylish. In 2004 where the freight attachment was, a new addition was added, (left side in photo) similar in size to the old, but rather open-air and is used as a pavilion. The town fire hall occupies the location where the station originally stood. The rather unusual structure currently serves as a museum and tourist bureau, and the town takes great pride in their landmark.
