The Goderich-Exeter Railway is just 3 months into being back when this image was shot in summer 1992. They started up with four GP9s, all initially Cartier units, built 1960, and they were numbered by GEXR 177-180.
Here we see two of them, GEXR 180 and 179 with a salt train crossing Black Point Road, having just left Goderich en route to Stratford, where they interchanged with CN.
The variety of power seen over the years on the GEXR has been nothing short of amazing.

  1. Very nice. You got that right about the variety of power on GEXR – anywhere from FEC to SP :) My only memory of these locomotives was one sitting at Kitchener station with the red one – 901 in the early 2000s. Very cool to see them in action.

  2. Thanks, Kevin: Awh yes, the 901. I remember one day (but which day?) I was taking pictures up along the line and 901 was set off on a stub somewhere around Seaforth. (@2005?) It was in consist, as I remember, but must have developed problems en route. As far as I know, it never ran again. I’m sure someone will correct me.

  3. Great early GEXR photo Arnold. I miss seeing those CN salt hoppers on the Guelph Subdivision. They were so common for so long then gone.

As for 901, it was 2002 when it was placed un-serviceable on the spur to the elevators just outside Mitchell, which is now FS Partners. We stumbled across it when it was there as well on a sweltering day. As you say, I don’t believe it ever ran again as well.

  4. Thanks. Thats right, Jason. It was outside Mitchell. I had forgotten just where it was. It sat there for quite a while, as I recall.

    Keep safe!!
