The first locomotives for GO Transit were the GP40TC model built in 1966. GO was not ready for start up so they were used in CN freight service for a few months. Here we see 601 leading an eastbound near Milton in December 1966.

  1. GO started the day after Labour Day in 1967 did it not?

  2. This is the first shot I have seen of GO in freight service before even being painted up.

  3. Wikipedia says GO started May 23/67. Sounds like the day after Victoria day holiday, perhaps.

  4. I remember it being the day after a Holiday Monday and it was 1967. I guess after 49 years I’ll have to rely on Wikipedia. I know I nearly got arrested by GO Transit or CN Police. I went up to the platform to meet my Dad as he got off the train as I had done when it was CN. He had to explain to the security guy I was his son and wasn’t trying to trespass. That was the first run-in I had with “Security”. It has increased so much since then too.
