The end of an era. The last eastbound Triple Crown Roadrailer arrived Mac Yard at 0605 on November 19th. Service had been winding down over the last few weeks with only a handful of trains operating, after being a 6 day a week service with trains up to 120 cars in length. Typically an overnight run, it was always a treat catch this train operating late, making for a daylight run across Southern Ontario. I decided to wake up early on the 19th and head into work with the hopes that the final train was operating late. After a few eastbounds pulled into the yard, IC 2456 rolled to a stop with the last Q 144 in tow. Here we see Q 14461 18 sitting on the Halton Inbound, waiting for M 39891 18 to finish yarding their train, before pulling into Conport for the last time with 29 trailers in tow. The final westbound Triple Crown Roadrailer is expected to operate before the end of the month, completeing the pull out of Triple Crown operations from Canada.

  1. Nice catch. You must be a dedicated railfan to get up early to catch this train.
I work there and don’t think I would have woken up that early..lol. Well done.

  2. I work in the Ops Centre there, and if I wasn’t starting work at 0700 I wouldn’t have been up that early either haha. Figured it was worth a shot getting a coffee and coming in a bit early!

  3. Ahh ok, then you had a good reason to show up early and get the shot :-)
I am an engineer out of Mac Yrd and have been lucky enough to work both the Toronto/Montreal and Toronto/Chicago Roadrailers. They are a very unique train and will be missed.

  4. Excellent shot Rob. Hopefully I can shoot the equipment headed back to Chicago.

  5. @JP the only problem with trying to catch 145 heading west is that its not normally ordered until about 1800-2000 and the sun is set by then :-(
