Caption: That fan favourite CN 6060 is seen moving smartly along as it races over Fourth Ave, and about to go under Seventh St Louth, West St. Catharines, on its way back to Toronto from Niagara Falls. Good crowd on board. After all, this is the Dominion Day / July 4th weekend. Or, Canada Day, as you newbies call it. :o) Surprising that Fourth Av was empty in this photo. No doubt the QEW had all the road traffic.
Nowadays, there is the standard railing over the bridge and a lot of foliage has sprung up, making this location a poor choice for photos.

CNR, wake up and smell the coffee (or coal smoke, or oil smoke). You should restore one of your classic steam locomotive and maintain it indefinately! Re-adopting the 6060 makes sense. She’s classically Canadian National.
Those boneheads that were in charge back in the early ’80s saw no future for CN 6060. They saw immense costs of overhauling the locomotive and promptly turned their collective noses up, resulting in the engine going to Alberta. In retrospect, the costs of overhaul would have been a drop in the bucket compared with taxpayer money that is wasted almost weekly in this province. Indeed it is a real shame. The very idea of mainline steam running to the Falls and back over Sat/Sun instead of GO would have had tourists coming from everywhere.
As an Albertan, I had high hopes for the future of this engine but, the provincial cabinet minister who spear-headed the whole thing unfortunately passed away and no one else in Government was willing to pick up the slack. The plan originally was to run tourist excursions out of Jasper but, due to some people’s mis-handling of relations with CN, the railway kiboshed the whole thing. I did get to work the concession car on the Whitecourt trip, though. It was a rainy day (of course) but had lots of good times.
