Stories of its existence floated around online for years, but actual photos were scarce:A rare view of Canadian Pacific's "newest" C-Liner: former CN CFA16-4 9344 sits in the tight bays of CP's Ogden Shops as shop crews get the unit ready to be lifted off its trucks by the large overhead shop crane. This unit, acquired by CP after it was retired by CN, was one of only two 9300-series CFA16-4's to get CN's new paint scheme. Most of CN's fleet of FM/CLC units were retired in the mid-late 1960's, stripped for parts at Montreal, and the carbodies sent to reclamation yards such as London for final scrapping. The fate that befell 9344 took a slightly different turn however, when CP wrecked one of their own C-Liners. CP CPA16-4 4054 was wrecked in January 1967 when it ran into a rock slide and hit several very large boulders on the tracks, significantly bending its frame behind the cab. CP, whose FM/CLC fleet was still a going concern at the time, purchased the carbody of retired CN 9344 in order to repair their 4054 (creating a new "CP 4054:2" from the CN unit). Apparently there were more compatibility issues between 9344 and the rest of CP's fleet than first though, and the project was never carried through. CP FM/CLC cab unit overhauls were curtailed a year or two later, and the remaining units were run until attrition and eventual mass retirement in 1975 ended CP's FM/CLC fleet. Both the unrebuilt CN 9344 and the wrecked CP 4054 were scrapped.Original photographer unknown, Dan Dell'Unto collection slide.
