So, when is a railway building, a station ?


   Substituting for the removed passenger station, the express freight shed office handled station duties until the end of rail service.

   Noteworthy Lindsay musings: 


   The passenger station removed 1963, after passenger service ended in January 1962

  Ironically, the largest passenger trains to originate from Lindsay occurred after the passenger service ended and after the passenger station was removed ! 

   Two fourteen car passenger specials, June 24 and June 26, 1963, Lindsay to Morrisburg, Ontario conveyed students ( June 24) and general public (June 26) to the newly opened Upper Canada Village. ( references:  Keith Hasen, ' Last Train from Lindsay'.) [  the UCV school specials were common in mid sixties]


   Worth mentioning:


   Perhaps the second largest passenger trains - up to thirteen cars - to call in Lindsay were the several UCRS fan trips: 1963 powered by 6167 (retired 1964) and 1966, 1968 and 1970 (?) powered by 6218. At least two of those trips transited the 55 mile Haliburton Sub (track lifted 1983), powered by SW's north of Lindsay, and other trips transited over the entire Uxbridge and Campbellford Subdivisions.


   And perhaps the second last passenger train to visit Lindsay ( and transit the entire Uxbridge & Campbellford Subdivisions )   is the  1977  CRHA  (one way Montreal – Toronto ) trip powered by 6060. 


   Per Keith's book the last passenger train to visit Lindsay, the passenger-less Northlander – on a publicity tour, enroute from Belleville's 'Railway Days' celebration – stopped at the express freight shed station May 27, 1978 ! 

   Interestingly the ( express freight shed) station agent position survived to November 1980, meanwhile CP only occasionally entered Lindsay with abandonment in 1987 – I do recall seeing a CP Rail SW in Lindsay in '85.

  After the 1989 closing of the  Union Carbide plant in Lindsay, CN got its way, the last train rolled out of town in 1991. All rails throughout Lindsay ( & surrounding countryside)  pulled in 1992.

  1. That’s an interesting little awning above the station door to protect the top of the outer door.

  2. I remember getting a shot of this building but never really knew what it was supposed to be. Sure didn’t look like a station, but I am sure it was capable as one.
