Caption: SIGNAGE AT SUMMIT. As seen from Coach 757 on Terra Transport's Mixed Extra 945 West on April 20, 1987, the official sign for 'Summit' is barely visible above what remains of a heavy winter's snowfall. It was at this point at Mileage 328.3 that the former Newfoundland Railway reached it's pinnacle at 1554 feet above sea level and no doubt that a few months earlier, the sign would have been completely covered under snow. While the rugged Juniper trees point east as part of their distinctive growth pattern, the photographer and his girlfriend continue to head west on this, their first Newfoundland rail journey. This sign has long since disappeared, along with the other official markings of the 547 mile narrow gauge railway, but has been replaced by a man-made one that not only displays the mileage and elevation in raised lettering but also wooden representations of the Canadian and Newfoundland & Labrador Flags.
