Caption: Save the Station !!! This whole town of 1500 or so people eventually were drawn into the drama. When CN closed the station in 1969, the last station master, D.C. Nunn, moved on to another location but his family stayed put in the old Stirling station until 1975, seeing it had comfortable living quarters upstairs and CN was not quite ready to demand it pulled down. But then CN stated making noise. Enter Gary Miller, a Native artist......(I was really surprised to discover this in research, as he was a friend of mine when he lived in Burlington during our teenage years)......who thought the station would be a nice place to set up his studio and gallery. He approached the town to purchase it. The town balked, seeing going thru all the expense and then leasing it out to an artist who may or may not be willing to pay the bills from there on. So nothing happened I gather that Gary let the idea go. But the seed had been sown, a rather lively group was formed and eventually became the Stirling Pioneer and Railway Historical Society and they convinced CN to hold on to the station past a deadline of April 30, 1985 while they worked out some way to purchase & restore the building. So they had one more year. Fund raisers began; "buy a button" campaign, bake sales and other promotions got the town council finally backing the idea to purchase and restore the station and the place was officially "saved" in October 1985. Restoration took place and Open House was a celebration on July 2, 1986. It just goes to show what can be down when everybody gets involved. A beautiful piece of history. It sits attractively along the old right of way, now a walking trail. Not sure what occupies the structure at this time but last I heard it was to be an area museum. It has come a long way since the first train from Belleville rolled into town back in 1877.
