  1. Graydon, I’m glad you stuck it out and managed to get what you really love – Daylight on the Waterloo spur.

Great work young man. If you are REALLY lucky you might find CN in Daylight, but as I stated, it’ll be incredibly exceptional for it to happen – most likely you’ll find a train outlawed in St. Jacobs or Elmira that didn’t make it before LRT opening.. cross your fingers :)

  2. Thanks Steve and I hope I do!
Or if let’s say a derailment occurs on this portion of the line during the southbound trip or a locomotive dies etc, once the situation is cleared out CN will finish off the final mile or so of the run in daylight with a fresh crew?

I was told by the GEXR flag manager in 2016 that this particular line on the GEXR operations has had the most derailments ever since GEXR was formed.
Last two he was aware of were in winter 2014-2015 and both caused by ice build ups on the tracks which caused the locomotives to leave the tracks at the crossings (one at King st in st Jacobs and other at South Feild dr).
Just curious, Steve are you or anyone else aware of any Waterloo Spur Derailments since then? I bet a lot of us still remember the derailemt behind Waterloo City Hall (not far from here) on the night of 10/11/12 and that sure shook up a lot of residence about the fact that GEXR tends to ‘keep quiet’ about the number of derailments here.

  3. @Railfan99 that information regarding derailments on the Waterloo Spur is completely wrong. GEXR doesn’t maintain or even own the Waterloo Spur, so whoever you talked to up there flagging wouldn’t of even a GEXR employee.

Great pic of 584 though, once the LRT is up and running you’re not likely to see any daylight freight movements.

  4. Graydon, I refrain from discussing the subject in public, to be frank derailments aren’t exactly a nice thing to photograph, and are really a bad day for everyone involved. I wouldn’t go talking about them either, you’ll be spreading misinformation that the general public may latch onto, and you don’t want false information getting out there.

You won’t see me going out of my way, the crews will have enough to deal with and the last thing they want is a photographer in their way. I advise you to do the same.

  5. You got a nice shot here Graydon. I managed to get them here once this summer as well and it was very close to being no sun due to them going up so late. At any rate, like Steve said, any daylight photographs on the Waterloo Spur is hard to get so you’re certainly fortunate and I’m glad to see that you’re efforts paid off this summer.

  6. Thank you so much Jay for your nice comment!
Yup this summer I went all out on 584 and managed a handful of shots in okay lighting which will be completely under darkness in 2019 once the LRT is open. I even got a couple in full sun which you’ll see on here soon.
Wish I could go back 10 years though to the time when weekend extras were fairly common. You were VERY lucky to have been able to shoot the extras you came across between 2007-2009 but in the end, I managed some pretty decent shots of 584 in the last rays of light on the last summer it was possible so I guess I can’t complain. Especially with the fact that I got a couple unike shots of a FREIGHT on streetcar tracks. Doubt they are as good as the photo Steve posted resonantly at U of W but I’ll take em.

  7. Graydon we’re happy a young eager Railfan got what he wanted before the cutoff :)

Daylight on the Waterloo spur was every day in the late 2000′s though. Didn’t need weekend extras…

  8. Actually Steve, from my understandings it appears that by 2007 at least, 584 was still an evening operation back then but the crew usually went on duty a little earlier than present. Jason Noe actually has a handful of really decent shots of 584 going up in evening hours back in 2008 i think. Kevin Flood has a couple as well beat U of W.
You’d know more than me but I think early 2000s and before that is when the Waterloo Spur saw daylight freights on a regular basis.

I also just got word now that LRT Opeaning day has yet again been delayed to Spring 2019. Doubt they’ll be any more daylight but hey, never say never
Maybe sometime between now and then I’ll just have to slip up to Kitchener on a weekend and try my luck to see what the Guelph Sub has to offer. Small small chance I’ll see an extra if I’m SUPER lucky.
It’s like bying a lottery ticket lol.

  9. In the late 2000′s the train was on duty about 5 PM and they went north in daylight daily, of course, in the winter it was dusk…

They bumped it an hour or two later and it’s been like that ever since.
