Rolling along the Speed River, CP T97 has a 320,000 lb presser vessel in tow from BWXT in Galt, destined for Goderich and ultimately Bruce Power's nuclear generating station in Douglas Point (Tiverton) Ontario. This $642 (CDN) million contract for 32 vessels will last for 10 years and this is only the third unit that has been shipped out. Three railways participate in the 84 rail mile move, CP 10 miles from Galt to South Junction, CNR 28 miles from South Junction to Stratford, and GEXR 46 to Goderich. A special unloading ramp has been constructed in Goderich to unload the vessels where trucks will complete the last 50 miles of the journey by road. Curiously, CN could haul from Galt directly to Stratford but since the takeover from GEXR (where GEXR said hold my beer and hauled it the whole way) they seem to have essentially abandoned the Fergus sub south of Eagle St, despite the tracks still in place and GEXR last doing this 3 years ago - allowing CP to originate the load and share in the revenue. A lucky catch as I had no idea this was happening, I was driving around bored and chose to follow the CNR and CPR Branchlines in Kitchener and managed to find them just as they were lifting it.. thank god CN wasn't running or I'd never have made it :)
