Working the rush hour shift when extra trains are put online to handle the evening crowds, a pair of H5 subway trains pause at Downsview Subway Station after completing their runs. Car 5734 is framed in the window of sister 5806, as the chimes sound and doors close before departure. In a few minutes, 5806 (with the downtown-bound photographer aboard) will follow 5734's set on the trip down to Union, up the Yonge line, and eventually to Finch.
At the time this photo was taken, the first and only new Toronto Rocket trainset on the property was still undergoing testing and training, and the 1970's vintage Hawker Siddeley H5 cars had the run of the mill on the Yonge-University-Spadina line with the newer Bombardier T1 cars. A little over two years later, the last stragglers of the once numerous 138 car H5 fleet, relegated to mostly rush-hour service, would be retired: some to be cut up for scrap and others to be refurbished for service overseas.
