I think we all miss these trains.
And this was just every day stuff back then. Nobody cared. You’d have a half dozen of these consists between CN and CP daily..
These are our “good old” days. Reflecting, yes, we did make efforts to catch these trains, but they were running so often we would often just say, “oh well, I’ll look for it tomorrow”. And so miss a few great lash-ups.
No regrets. Most of us did what we could.
I didn’t do enough, I took it for granted.
Having said that I was more of a branchline/industrial guy and not a “chase the mainline” kind of guy. I spent my time on the St. Thomas Sub, Sarnia Sub, Hamilton Industrial scene and other shortlines. The mainline was just something to do when you were bored. Something was always coming…
But I did go out of my way for as many NS trains as I could get – after all you just had to get trackside before 0800 to get both NS trains MOST days, sometimes they’d beat you… then you had the rest of the day for whatever was coming.
I chased NS to Fort Erie Once when I had a family gathering in town. I missed 369 meeting 327 at duff! To do it again…
We certainly couldn’t be everywhere. I did next to nothing out by Sarnia.

Oh and the grain traffic was from the St. Thomas and Eastern in St. Thomas (or from CN seed plant in St. Thomas). Either way it was interchange traffic…. amazing they ran 7 days a week regardless if they had a train or not…
some days both directions were light power
