One final run...
South Simcoe Railway 2-4-0 No. 136 hauls 2 coaches up the small grade back towards Tottenham after 2 days of excursions filled with happy tourists and eager photographers. SSR 136 has a rich history has a rich history in Canada. Built for CP in 1883, it helped complete the transcon, worked out in New Brunswick for decades, and was the last 2-4-0 steamer in service for CP, lasting until 2/1960. After CPs retirement, it led various excursion trains around Toronto including the infamous "tripleheader" to Orangeville later in 1960. It's been showcased in multiple TV shows, movies, and a documentary about the completion of the transcontinental railway. These days it spends its time on the SSR. As far as I know, it only ran for 2 days the entire year (2022). Rumors are circulating about a possible expensive boiler replacement needed this winter. Some are going as far as saying it will never be in service again (I sure hope not). 
My shot was of the final trip of 2022 (hence the caption at the start). Hopefully this was not it's last excursion ever...

  1. Only time will tell if it is indeed the final run. Been hearing these ‘rumors’ for years.

    Never say it’s the final run until confirmed. Everyone said OSR’s last train was the ‘final run’ on the Cayuga.. how wrong they were.

    The final train to Orangeville is done… correct – but the rest of it’s not ripped up yet for example :)

  2. Can’t see the SSR being nearly as popular without steam.

  3. Very, very nice picture Isaac, beautiful fall colours, like the way you captured the red classification light and the wisps of steam. Such a classic view, historical and hopefully not the last time to see 136 in operation. SRR mechanical staff are to be congratulated on putting 136 back into operation even if it was for 2 days in 2022. Nothing on SSR web site about steam operation in 2023.
