If I may – while I wasn’t there in 1985. But in the last years of NS in Ontario if NS ran an extra train (Train 99/98), or they had extra power from a 343/344, or 328 did not run the day before, they could lash more than two units to return them on a eastbound to Buffalo. I presume this also happened on westbounds out of St. Thomas when they still ran. (344/343 ended January 2004).

I never did see 343/344 in the flesh but this regularly happened on NS 328 ex St. Thomas. I suspect this is the opposite on a 27 (which became 343) ex St. Thomas.
