On a dull and dreary day, I get a lucky catch with three working jobs in the SOR/CN Hamilton Yard. CN 556 has just arrived with a cut of cars and is preparing to return light power back to Aldershot. SOR 494 (Afternoon yard job) is cutting ahead of the day job (SOR 493) as both have work on the N&NW spur in north Hamilton.

  1. One has to wonder about the future of this yard. Hamilton wants it gone, but Burlington doesn’t have any desire to have the facility relocate in that vacant area east of the Aldershot GO station. Quite the busy place.

  2. What’s the construction in the lower left?

  3. Glad you asked Rob. It’s the Bay St. overpass replacement, which is being done by CN. CN currently has maintenance responsibility for Bay St. and John St road overpasses as a result of construction of the nearby station in the 1930′s.

Ultimately, as I understand it construction was to be completed by now but has been delayed until warmer weather to pour the rest of the concrete. This keeps a rarely seen vantage point open for a couple more months…

Also interesting is that CN and the City of Hamilton are going to trade – Bay and John St maintenance will revert to the City, and Centennial Parkway (Rail over road) will revert to CN.

  4. Also of note is the James St. North station is scheduled to be completed in 2015.. I expect platform and parking construction to commence in earnest this year.

  5. Clearly I haven’t been down there in a while. Thanks Steve.
