Oh! If you hang around long enough....


   The presence of a steam generator equipped, western based, CP Rail  Geep 9  on VIA #1 indicates a regular 1400 series F unit required replacement. The 8512 is the future 1513 (Winnipeg).


   The daily VIA #1 is traversing the CN Weston Subdivision and in under one mile, at Parkdale, will swing north on to the Newmarket Subdivision.


   Next to the Budd built baggage dormitory car, that Manor series sleeping car is in crew dormitory service. And that car in VIA livery is likely a 5700 series Dayniter coach.


   On the right is the CP Rail Galt Subdivision – the regular daily route of the CPR The Canadian.

  1. Thats the photo I wish I had taken. I was there that day, maybe a couple hundred feet to the left of you. Waited it out and then realized I had not advanced the film, and ended up with a shot of the power and then a ‘going’ shot. Recognized the train right away. From there headed to Mac Yard.
    Nice image. Thanks for rekindling not so good memories. :o )

  2. Hey Albert, hear you – fumble fingers here too – missed too many potential great shots due to issues: focusing, exposure, rewind / film advance and even haze / shadows ! …. Today’s digital is way too easy – so simple, point and shoot dozens of images in seconds – then photo shop the heck out of it ! Visited the Strachan area several times that spring – the area was a popular weekend spot after word got out that the Canadian days – out of Toronto – were numbered. After June 16 1979 daylight Canadian departures were non existent for decades ! Do recall speaking to someone near the Strachan crossing. Was Bill McArthur – blue Chevy wagon – there that afternoon? Did you captured that Canadian near Snider?

  3. Dunno why I keep getting called “Albert”. Not my name. :o ) Common mistake for some reason.
    I often went to Toronto with Bill in his blue Chevy. Possibly Dave Stowe accompanied him more than I did; as Bill was an entertaining guy to spend a day with. However, Bill and I did get down around Spadina quite often over the years. This particular day though, I think I was on my own as I ended up at Mac. Did not visit Snider that day……

    Do recall talking to Bill M at Strachan, perhaps a different day.
    And daylight departures for Canadian resumed 1985 – for a while, until 1990.
