Caption: Northward from Cranbrook to Kimberley on what is now the Northstar Rail Trail used to be CP’s Kimberley subdivision, primarily to serve Cominco operations at Kimberley. On my first solo road trip to the Kootenay region, a northward train of empties was followed from Cranbrook, with a big MLW, CP 4501, leading and a plain SD40, CP 5518, trailing, Nearing Kimberley, at a crossing of Knighton Road (mileage not recorded) in the area known as Chapman Camp, nearly 50 years ago on 1974-04-25, an everyday scene was caught, before SD40-2s in their increasing numbers took over in the west.
