Northbound, coming off the huge Parry Sound trestle and about to round the curve on approach to the station, CP 5901 leads 5548 and a unknown number with a load of vehicles stretching as far back as the eye can see. This great little location for shooting has long ago succumbed to the onslaught of vegetation. However, the fire tower in the background is still viable, but due to directional running with CN and CP sharing assets there rarely is a preferred southbound move seen from that location any more.

  1. Interesting seeing the open autoracks loaded with vehicles. Nice angle for the action shot.

  2. Thats the reason I selected this shot for RP. I used to love seeing the long rows of new vehicles on the trains going by. Now, it is just graffiti on an enclosed autorack car we get to see. Thanks for the comment !!

  3. For a while on CN, before everything became covered and it didn’t matter, they tried to marshal 4 or 5 cars ahead to the autoracks to “protect” the cars from exhaust spewing crud on the new cars. This wonderful shot brings back many good Parry Sound memories, and the hours spent on the fire tower waiting for trains that often didn’t come, or shots with the Kodak 110 that didn’t turn out so well. But southbound in the morning sun could no be beaten.

  4. I didn’t know about the protective cars up ahead. Of course. Makes all the sense in the world. Thanks for this. The Fire Tower angle, if anything came southbound on the trestle these days (like MoW moves) the view is now limited to out over the bridge as those evergreens get taller and taller………

  5. Restricted views…you should see the Spiral Tunnels…except you can’t. :(
