No White Christmas in site here as we have a snow less Christmas eve in 1986 with two GEEP's waiting to cross the Welland Canal. They have just completed a series of lumber car drops in the former Canadian Furnace yard along the east side of the Welland Canal for Sherk Lumber (a firm that dates back to the early 1800's and is still in business as a Timber Mart). The lumber would be shipped by barge to the United States. The CN NICKEL sign is barely visible below the crossing lights on the left and the Bridge 20 Signal #189 controlled by the St. Lawrence Seaway can be seen just to the right of the railway lift bridge. Canal traffic normally runs mid-March to early January so these would be the last ships to clear the system before the winter tie up.

  1. Excellent capture Michael … one can try to piece together the trackage design of the 80′s but this fully depicts the Port’s easterly component. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Thanks Glenn, much appreciated !
