Mystery Solvers Needed!


For those that may not be aware of the story, over 35 years ago - through a strange twist of fate - I became the guardian of a small Canadian railway slide collection.  Until I restored and published the images in September, I did not know who the photographer was.  During those mystery years, I can’t tell you how many hours I studied this picture… hoping that perhaps it held the clue to the photographer’s identity.  Who was this man with the three small children?


Within hours of publishing the collection, the Canadian railfan community came together to identify the photographer as the late Del Rosamond, from Pembroke, Ontario.  With the help of social media and a very interested Pembroke historian / detective (thanks Dave!), I was able to connect with Del’s remaining family.  They have been very gracious and supportive – and have given me permission to migrate his collection to Railpictures.ca.


And what about those people in this photograph?  Turns out his family doesn’t know either.


I’d be grateful if anyone can identify this CNR boneyard.  The only clue (perhaps beside the locomotive itself) is the single brick chimney. Bonus points if someone can identify the people!

  1. Ooops… I forgot to mention that Ten-Wheeler #1397 was built by MLW in 1913. It was scrapped in October, 1961.

  2. Is the train seen rusting away here older than the one in the b/w photo Bob Shaw recently posted – also from 1960?

    Del’s original slide is marked “Barrie, 1960″. My sources tell me that CN stored a large number of steam locomotives at the Allandale yard, prior to shipping them to London for scrapping.

  4. …Vintage Barrie *Photographs, Moments & Memories. *Archiving 15 new images of the Allandale/Barrie CNR Railyards Collection of Canadian Steam Engines 1960. Historically identified as “The End of the Age of Steam” in Canada. This “Watermarked ” *C. Robert Craig Memorial Library Collection features an important cache of Steam Engine Images highlighting the partial Collection of Railroad History that was stored in the old Allandale/Barrie Railyards awaiting destruction in London, ON. Vintage Barrie has stored and posted other images of this “Collection” from the Age of Steam. These additional images is in some cases but different views of previously viewed Engines and accessories, however the significance of these images and their relation and importance to the once thriving Rail Community of Allandale & Barrie, ON is important to Archive for the generations to come; so that they may be aware of the importance of this industry to Canada and our own local History…in no particular order…The End of the Age of Steam 1960 The Allandale/Barrie CNR Roundhouse Railyard.
