As the sun sets in Manitoba, VIA Rail Attendant Hayley announces that we are fast approaching the very first grain elevator to be seen from the Dome Car ‘Glacier Park’ on the ‘Canadian’ since departure from Toronto some 28 hours earlier. Just east of Winnipeg, the town of Dugald has one of the former Manitoba Pool elevators still intact and with a capacity of 4,010 tonnes, it is truly one of the rapidly disappearing Prairie landmarks. Dugald is also the infamous site of a 1947 train accident that claimed the lives of 31 people when CNR Extra 6001 ran into the eastbound ‘Continental Limited’ passenger train. Thank you Sir! It was 30 years since we saw our last grain elevator and we were surprised at how many had disappeared in that time. For us, it was what we associated so much with the Prairies during our first trip on the ‘Canadian’ while going through Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta and returning on the ‘Super Continental’.
