Caption: Led by a classic A-B-A set of covered wagons, CN's Nanticoke steel train approaches Stelco's Lake Erie Works. Late summer 1986 kept photographers occupied with this train as the days of the F7s were waning. Most shots on this site past September 1986 include GP9s in the consist:

So I have a question for Arnold and the others who were chasing these at the time : was it known the F units were on the way out???

Oh those F units! Miss seeing them. Loved the look of them….likely that love came from my first train set. Or was it the zebra striped paint scheme? Dunno….but just the look of these engines always brings back great memories of seeing them as a kid.
When the train was started,the roadmaster based in Hamilton was the person who started the train with this power. I forget his name.Check Green Frog Videos as I think the former Canrail Video might be available from them. Bruce

. The summer of 85 was the last big summer for f-unit action in Redwater. You knew something was up when they, pretty much all, returned to the mother ship in 86. The odd sighting of the 9172 was about it for 1986, except for a number of B units (both varieties). The 9167 returned in 87 for what seemed a monotonous run, you’d just about have given anything to see a different A unit. It’s last run, which also brought a close of all f units on the Coronado, was on July 25th, 1988. So, by 1986 with just a few B units working, it seemed to me that the f units big day on the rails was over. They were now all grouped where they could be stripped of parts and/or sent to Stelco and/or sold. To this day, there is not a better diesel sound than a group of f’s hauling, IMO
