Caption: Just another little localized image for the fans who live in Niagara.....this is CN 7165 which this day worked the Port Weller line thru NorthEnd St. Catharines. The loco is stopped just short of Welland Av and I am across the street at the corner of Welland & Neilson. The lads have 'abandoned ship' for a run into Wendys (just out of sight on the left) for a snack.
The gas station, for those interested, originally was a Supertest station; all kinds of trouble putting the tanks in and anchoring them because in the 1970s this whole area was a thick swamp. The tanks wouldn't stay down. (gas is lighter than water) Supertest was taken over by BP around 1973 and now we see it is part of PetroCanada. Gas is 44.5 a litre, reads the sign, and the guy driving that heap about to cross the tracks should use some of the money he saves on gas to get himself a headlight.:o)
The SW8 switcher, built back in 1951, was retired by the end of the 1980s.

The 7100′s were being purged out of the Edmonton area at this time. I need to check my notes, might still have been able to photograph one or 2 of these in our downtown City yard in late 83. The Kingsway and 142nd street spurs still had traffic on them and the 7100′s were the typical goat used. Most crews did not like them, they were not big pullers.

No argument from me on that point. I will further it with, whoever came up with the notion at the NAR to name their locomotives, deserves to have a siding named after him. I always thought it was so cool to have the Peter Pond, Ft. McMurray or any of those names driving by.

Thanks, lad. The only thing left in the scene now is the apartment building on the left background and the pavement. Tracks are gone, Theatre gone, Car Wash/station is now a CDN Tire bar. On the right now is Wendys/TImmys. Welland Av has been widened and Neilson Av has been realigned out of view to the right.(stoplights) In between the old theatre building and the PetroCan is a restaurant in the background, part of a Mall that has been razed.
Man does seeing this see spark some memories from my childhood. Great shot and thanks for sharing Mr Mooney as well as all the info!

Price of gas was largely the same in the late 80′s.
Even in 2001 I could fill up at 59 cents
