It's St. Patrick's Day - and before it was to the bar for some beers, it was out trackside for some trains. I wanted to see for myself what all the fuss was about with this AMTK 514, and so the first train up for the day was VIA 97 as it passed by Parkdale Yard on its way back to New York. Next was the CN 0700 yard job heading past MANA into Stelco.

  1. For me, this is the perfect unit leading an Amtrak. I’m not to keen on the looks of the streamlined GE passenger units. Good work on this photo Jamie.

Hah! Speaking of Americans, I was watching the news earlier, the one fellow from the US was commenting on how the Canadians live in a sane country. You betcha :-) wouldn’t have it any other way.

  2. Great picture Jamie, good angle with good lighting, blue sky and topped off with rare appearance of GE unit on the Maple Leaf. Twenty years ago, Amtrak’s GE passenger units were regularly used on the International to/from Chicago and a common sight on CN’s back line to London on their way to Sarnia. Unfortunately this service ended after 9/11. Thanks for sharing this picture

  3. @railwayguy… pretty sure the Maple Leaf has a GE unit 100% of the time…

  4. @railwayguy: I’m pretty sure you mean this type of GE unit is rare…the long P42s are the most commonly used…both these and the one pictured are GEs.

  5. Hi Kevin and Tim, of course you are absolutely correct. They are both built by GE. I should have used different description for the 500’s. At one time, when the 500’s had red-white blue striping paint scheme, they were nick named “Pepsi cans”. But with the current grey/blue paint scheme for 514 as above, the nick name is no longer applicable.. Still like both models.
