It was a real shame I could not back up any more; choice was fall down the embankment or move to the right and get a bunch of shrubs in the photo.
But you get the idea. Winona's CN station looked pretty good going into the winter of 1974/75. However, it did not last to see another. The structure was totally destroyed in a fire around October 1975. A real shame.
Never heard whether there was a problem within the building or it was arson. This station was located just off of Winona Rd opposite Railway St., a very short lane in which one could access a siding and a small yard there.
Today, the Costco and its gas bar are opposite where this rather nice building once stood.

  1. Wow. Thanks for sharing

  2. You’re welcome.
I remember going to Winona about the beginning of October, 1975; because I wanted to shoot a freight as well as the Budds going by. I was shocked when arriving, only strands of the east wall and the blade pole were left standing. Not something that was easy to forget, and worse, I did not find a news article on the fire either. I could still smell the smoke, so it had happened in the week before I showed up there. :o ( A lot of stations along the peninsula fell to the flames; besides Winona, Grimsby, Merritton, Thorold were others.

  3. The proud namesake of a CN Heavyweight 12 section / drawing room sleeper….now both are gone!
